Serving all music educators in the state of Nevada, the mission of the Nevada Music Educators Association is to promote music education, to ensure its inclusion in all students’ core curriculum, and to guarantee access to quality musical experiences for all learners.
The Every Student Succeeds Act includes music in its listing of core subjects. NMEA is dedicated to ensuring the access, presence, and perseverance of quality music programs operated by certified music educators, for all students across the state, regardless of circumstance. We want to stress the importance of fully funding and supporting arts education for all in every school district of Nevada.
Understandably, many are concerned regarding the safety of the music classroom and the challenges of maintaining meaningful instruction in the era of COVID-19. The belief of the Nevada Music Educators Association (NMEA) is that viable music instruction can and should continue while adhering to guidelines set by local and national advisors.
The National Core Arts Standards guide us to Create, Perform, Respond and Connect. While the current health crisis brings into question how it is possible to provide quality music instruction with restrictive guidelines in place, we work alongside many partners, including the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), to provide resources to do just that.
Social-emotional learning is embedded into our work as music educators. This need transcends all communities, but especially in a time when students have been functioning for long periods of time without interaction beyond their families and devices. Music instruction includes and enhances these aspects to school such as social awareness, leadership, expression, problem solving, academic achievement, and other relational skills.
There are ways to keep our vibrant music programs alive while maintaining a safe learning environment for teachers and students, and we look forward to continuing to develop these resources.
